My Experience, My Message
My speaking engagements focus on my personal experience of rape and the aftermath including details about the rape kit, the investigation, and the justice system. It is not very often professionals in the field get to hear full-circle what happens to a victim from their perspective, and I offer that as an expert based on my own experiences. My goal is to break the silence around sexual violence, educate the community, and empower both survivors and professionals in the field.
Another theme I touch on is perspective. What happened to me didn't just impact me. It rippled outward. The man who raped me left behind multiple secondary victims, including his ex-wives and six children. These broader consequences are often overlooked.
I also speak about what it means and feels like to reclaim your body, voice, and power. While many survivors share heartbreaking accounts of being failed by the system, I strive to be an example of what happens when things go right. The professionals I worked with acted with integrity, empathy, and accountability. The success of my case is not just a legal outcome, it is a testament to what is possible when survivors are believed and supported. I hope that someday more people are able to see justice like I did, particularly people from marginalized communities.
My assault has been presented as a case study by myself, the investigators, and prosecutor from my case, so I have a PowerPoint that goes with my presentation that will include the 911 call, photos of evidence, and specific charges listed. I am able to gear my presentation toward whatever audience I present to. However, my overall mission is to foster hope, connection, and change, leaving audiences informed, empowered, and ready to stand alongside survivors.
